Proper Soot and Odor Cleaning Protocol:

  1. The first step is to determine the type of soot and odor one is attempting to clean.
  2. Next determine the most appropriate Personal Protection Equipment and protocol to be followed depending on the equipment and chemicals used for the clean-up process.
  3. Be sure to ventilate the area and set up proper containment. Prevent cross contamination by sealing vents and turning off HVAC systems when possible.
  4. Remove burned debris were possible without affecting the structural integrity of the building. Remove all garments, drapery, furniture and miscellaneous items that can be cleaned and deodorized. Commercial dehumidifiers, air movers and air scrubbers should be installed where water was used to extinguish the fire. The type of fire will determine the proper clean-up process. This is important because if the wrong process is used more damage can occur and additional cleaning may be required.

Protein fires are the most common fires starting in a cooking area and usually involve meat or poultry. These fires create a greasy residue and are yellow or brown color. Begin structural clean up in the most affected areas using a water based suppression spray that has odor counteractants, emulsifiers, and penetrants. Next use an odor counteracting granule and finally thermal fog the structure. In severe cases soda blasting or dry ice blasting may be used. Wipe all metallic surfaces with an oil based product to prevent rust and staining. Clean all plastic and painted surfaces using a mild alkali based detergent.

Natural substance odors are a result from burned wood, paper, cotton, wool etc. The residue is gray or black in color and is a dry powdery substance. Use a high power HEPA vacuum to remove as much lose debris as possible without touching or brushing the surface. Dry sponges can be used for damage caused by high oxygen fires followed by a low-alkali detergent and a thorough rinsing. Low-oxygen fires do not use dry sponges due to smearing and can cause the soot to spread. Use high alkali detergents with warm water and rinse thoroughly.

Synthetic Substances are plastics and textiles. This residue is black and smudges easily. Use high-alkali detergents with warm water and rinse thoroughly.

Most fires have a combination of products that are consumed and each requires a different cleaning technique but all require proper PPE and containment to prevent injury and cross contamination.
